Having a "whale" of a time!- Straddie Island 08

Grab a cuppa tea and check out some of our pictures!

Follow us down under...and outside of the city....across the water on a ferry....over to North Stradbroke (Straddie) Island! We had the best weekend imaginable. Superb weather, and only minor hiccups like Summer's cold and getting our poor Corolla stuck in the sand. Here are some highlights from our trip:

This hand drawn map was hung up in the cabin we stayed in. We stayed in "Point Lookout", which is the most north-east point on this island. Infamous for seeing whales migrate, gorgeous sand/surf and 4wd on the beach, we knew we had to check this island out.
The cove we spent most of our time at...

(These signs are everywhere in this country!!)

Off-roading (mind you, in the '84 Toyota Corolla-all B's idea)...right before we got stuck in the sand. Good thing some nice Pommies (Brits) turned around to tow us out!!

The view from our balcony/where we spotted a humpback whale first thing Saturday morning! He was playing just to the right of the larger rock. :0)

Just a cool spot on one of the beaches :)

Some of the bizarre looking trees and wildlife that can be found all over the island. There are swamps, some cactus, tropical bushes, red dirt, freshwater lagoons and sand ALL over Straddie!
As usual, off the beaten path.
Went for a swim and, of course, backflipped off the nearby cliff....all before he turned bright red. The temperature outside was a nice 24 degrees, but the breeze was misleading-therefore Brian was a redneck in no time.
We couldn't figure out why this little pool of ocean water was reddish. Any idea?

Looks like somebody snuck in a beer whilst we were hiking!
B looking for me amongst all the Asian tourists in this group. (jk)
We love this island outside of the city!
Totally worth waking up at 5:30 a.m. for...

What a fabulous birthday gift and an amazing holiday....all just about 30 minutes from our house, and then a 40 minute ferry ride out to the island! If you come visit us, we will take you here!! (BRIBE-BRIBE-BRIBE)

Gorgeous! How did you get so high in the air in that jumping picture? Maybe you should look into basketball...

We're definitely going to come visit. Straddie Island is gorgeous. Glad you're having lots of fun. Belated Happy Birthday!

The red water is from an algal infestation. Certain conditions cause them to explode in population and then they cause the water to turn red. It's dangerous to eat fish that feed in that area and obviously to drink the water :-x

I keep laughing at that picture because it must be an optical illusion, I cannot (nor have I ever) been able to jump as high as it looks!! It must be the angle of the camera (Brian was sitting down taking it from farther away) We'll pretend I just naturally did that, though...
