For the last two weeks, we have watched endless hours (especially this weekend) of Aussies triumphantly winning more medals than they have in previous Olympics. They dominated in pole vaulting, diving, swimming, kayaking, water polo, sailing, rowing and many of the water sports. We saw heaps ofAussie footage on TV because most of the athletes came from this state, Queensland! The Australian community have really rallied around their athletes and you'd think each one of them won 8 medals like (our) Michael Phelps. The competitive team spirit was alive and well even in the grocery store! (Yes, I bought Aussie-shaped burger patties)
It was a lot of couch vegging, awe-inspiring, applause-inducing fun in our house. Disappointingly, however, the scandals and overall "dodginess" of the Chinese have led us to be skeptical of all of their medals, the ceremonies, and REAL ages of their athletes. I'd say the whole Beijing scandals/biases/dodginess did put a bit of a damper on our spirits, as it was hard to cheer on the Americans and Aussies, knowing the Chinese would likely take gold anyway!
Oh well. At least we liked talking about Michael Phelps to everyone around here, who (like us) believed to be part dolphin. ;)
