Brian just told me the other day that for my birthday he is planning on taking me to Stradbroke Island for a getaway weekend! :) It's going to be lovely to lounge around the beach, kayak, and swim if the weather is warm enough!
Stradbroke (or "Straddie" as they call it around here) Island is a long stretch of sand located on the most eastern part of Queensland. Visitors love coming to Straddie Island for weekend getaways, to see whales migrate up the coast, and play in the ocean. I was just starting to get really excited to possibly spot some whales, dolphins and turtles on this trip...until I saw this news story on tv this morning.
I was saddened to learn that along its migrating course for the humpback whales, this little calf was found near Sydney, helplessly following a small boat and trying to nurse off of it. It apparently got separated from its mother, and was desperately trying to suckle on a yacht that it thought to be its mum. :(
Five minutes ago-while I was writing this blog-the news anchors updated us with a report that since the wildlife workers don't know what to feed it and cannot find another pod for him to join, they have decided to euthanize this poor little guy...Tonight.
I'm way too sensitive to handle this story (eyes tearing up right this second), but nonetheless I hope the rest of his pod has safe travels as they head up north this winter....maybe we'll see his family whilst visiting Straddie...
