So I helped my friend Jill decorate her Christmas tree the other day, and she handed me a box of these. She and I put them on and around her tree and when I asked her what those were, she gave me a weird look and laughed. (I saw them at the store and just assumed they were empty candy-shaped gift boxes to stuff with candy?) I told her we didn't have these in the States for the holidays, and she couldn't believe it! She took one out, pulled one end and I pulled the other and it opened with a loud *POP* and had a little Christmas hat inside! Others have a toy or a funny (lame) joke inside, like a fortune cookie or something. These "bon bons" come in different sizes and we get more of them next week! I had to blog about this because I'm wondering...did my family not get the memo? Is this a purely British/Aussie thing, or do any of you guys have these at Christmas too? Comments welcome!
p.s. Regarding previous post (underneath this one)...Brian's fishing trip got canned at the last second due to windy conditions at sea. He was incredibly sad, but got to go jet skiing instead!

Oh what fun! I've seen them, exactly as packaged, just never bought and popped one =) But now that I know something OTHER THAN candy might come flying out, I will buy some!!
I've definitely seen them before, but it may have been in my travels. So, I know what they are, but I can't recall ever seeing them sold in US.
The closest thing I can think of is those weird little party poppers that you pull a string on and it explodes confetti and streamers into the air.
Just as I suspected... It's a commonwealth thing:

Krysta, if you found them in the US, they must be imported!
Nope! NEVER seen them! EVER. haha. They sound pretty cool though.
Neither Mona nor I have seen those... so that kind of counts out Tucson, Wisconsin, and the Philippines for having these :P
I have so seen those before!! I love the little tissue paper hats that come out of them... I have seen them around New Year here... not for Christmas!
