Dustin and I finally gathered up all the necessary equipment to spend a few days in the bush! We were sure to “Be Prepared” but we didn’t take with us any of the luxuries afforded in the city. We set off to The Granite Belt region of south east Queensland which is well known for its excellent red wines, cherries, apples and other fruit. With nothing but some hi-tech, quick drying clothing, a backpack and enough food for 2 days we planned to walk 28 kilometres (17 miles) through the bush. Starting Friday we set up camp at night, cooked a quick meal and went to sleep with the sound of Roos jumping in the bush (seriously!).
We woke up to our first daylight and our campsite was amazing! We were at the base of giant granite formations sticking out of the Earth. A 15 minute walk straight up the steep sides yielded some great views, and awesome pictures. We cooked a big breakfast, ate a Power bar or two and after cleaning up camp started walking on our longest day which we planned to cover over 20 kilometres.
Our route took us north towards Dr. Robert’s waterhole where Platypus can be spotted (or so they say). Before reaching the waterhole we came across this amazing stream flowing over massive slabs of granite. Queensland had recently received 4 straight days of the heaviest rain in years so this lucky find may have been seasonal. We refilled our water bottles here and soon found the waterhole (sans Platypi). A few more K's down the trail brought us past The Pyramids which are MUCH bigger than they look on film and Underground Creek which was flowing strong. Arriving at our halfway point we were met by more Roos and even one little Joey.
10 more kilometres to go we were in for some of the steepest bits yet, up to the top of Castle Rock. This 40 minute one way excursion was well worth it, the views and the extreme breezes were stunning. We spotted our camp site, ate a mostly gourmet meal and slept well on a grassy patch far away from any humans.
The last day we were in for the steepest bit but the shortest walk, over Mt. Norman and back to our glorious Corolla. We’d eaten well and slept great so our final stretch home was very enjoyable and not too exhausting. We were sure to stop into the excellent wineries in the Granite Belt and eat a well deserved burger before driving 3 hours home to Brizzy.
Great weekend, Dustin and I are already planning for the next adventure!
